How-to: Update Donor Information for Completed Transactions

Edit donor information for a contribution after the transaction has already been made.

On some occasions, you may find that a donor requests to have their information changed after they’ve already contributed to your fundraiser. For instance, your donor may have made a typo or entered the wrong mailing address.

What donor information can I edit after a transaction is complete?

You can edit the following fields after a transaction has been made:

  • Who receives credit for the donation
  • Per-unit pledge and the maximum amount (for A-Thon Campaigns)
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number
  • Responses to custom questions
  • Donation honoree (also called the donor’s display name — the name shown in the public activity feed)

How do I update donor information for completed transactions?

  1. Go to Account Navigation in the left menu and select Campaigns.
  2. If you have chosen a list view, click on the Campaign title. If you have chosen a grid view, click on the Campaign image.
  3. Select View Donations.
  4. Hover your mouse over the donation you wish to edit and click on the 3-dot icon to the right:

To change the honoree’s name (the donor’s display name), check the box next to Make this donation in the name of someone else and enter the new name.

Can donors update their own information?

Yes, donors can also edit their information directly from their own accounts, including their donation honoree (display name), as long as donor privacy settings are enabled for your campaign. Learn more here: How-to: Make Changes to Your Donation.

How do I enable donor privacy settings?

Donor privacy settings control whether donors can choose how their name appears publicly in the activity feed. When enabled, donors are asked at checkout how they’d like their name displayed, and they can also update it at any time from their own account — even after the campaign has ended.

To enable donor privacy settings:

  1. Go to Campaign Setup.
  2. Select Options, then Checkout Options.
  3. Scroll down to Customize donor privacy options.
  4. Check the box to allow donors to display their donation under a different name.

You can enable this setting at any time, even after your campaign is already live. Changes take effect immediately for future transactions. Enabling this setting after a campaign ends still allows donors to update their display name on past transactions through their own account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the donation amount after a transaction is complete?

No, you cannot change the donation amount after a transaction has been completed. However, for A-Thon Campaigns, you can edit the per-unit pledge amount and maximum amount, which may affect the final total.

Can a donor change their display name or the name shown in the activity feed?

Yes, donors can update their donation honoree (display name) from their own account at any time, including after the campaign ends. However, this is only possible if you have enabled donor privacy settings for the campaign. If a donor contacts you requesting a display name change and the option is not available to them, enable donor privacy settings in Campaign Setup and let the donor know they can then update it themselves.

How long after a donation can I edit donor information?

You can edit donor information at any time after a transaction has been completed, regardless of how much time has passed. There’s no time limit for making these updates.

Will the donor be notified when I update their information?

The system does not automatically notify donors when you update their information on their behalf. If you make changes based on a donor’s request, it’s good practice to confirm the updates with them directly.

Can I change who receives credit for a donation?

Yes, you can change who receives credit for a donation after the transaction is complete. This is useful for correcting attribution errors or when a donor wants to credit a different Participant or Team.

What if a donor wants to change information I can’t edit?

If a donor needs to change information that isn’t editable through the system (like the donation amount or payment method), they should contact you directly. You may need to process a refund and have them make a new donation with the correct information.
