How-to: Set Minimum and Maximum Per-Unit Pledge Amounts

Set limits on the amount donors can pledge to support A-Thon Participants.

A-Thons allow donors to support individual Participants* or Teams* by pledging to donate a certain amount per unit of activity completed. For example, if you’re running a Read-A-Thon, a donor might pledge $1 for every page a Participant reads.

*Terminology may differ according to Campaign settings.

Why should I set minimum and maximum pledge amount limits?

RallyUp allows you to set limits on the amount that donors can pledge per-unit of activity, which can offer some general guidance to donors and prevent them from pledging inappropriate amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a per-unit pledge amount?

A per-unit pledge amount is the amount a donor commits to give for each unit of activity a Participant completes. For example, in a Read-A-Thon, a donor might pledge $1 for every page read, or in a Walk-A-Thon, $5 for every mile walked.

Why would I set pledge amount limits?

Setting pledge amount limits provides guidance to donors about appropriate giving levels and prevents pledges that are too low to be meaningful or too high to be realistic. This helps donors make informed decisions and protects both donors and Participants from inappropriate pledge amounts.

Can I set different limits for different A-Thon activities?

Yes, you can set unique minimum and maximum per-unit pledge amounts for each individual A-Thon activity in your Campaign. This allows you to customize limits based on the specific activity type or difficulty level.

What happens if a donor tries to pledge outside the set limits?

If a donor attempts to enter a pledge amount below the minimum or above the maximum you’ve set, they won’t be able to proceed with that amount. They’ll need to adjust their pledge to fall within the acceptable range.

Are pledge amount limits required for A-Thons?

No, setting minimum and maximum pledge amounts is optional. However, it can be helpful for guiding donors and ensuring pledge amounts are appropriate for your Campaign goals and audience.

Why did my Campaign total jump to an unexpectedly high amount after I entered a Participant’s results?

This usually happens when one or more per-unit pledges don’t have a maximum cap set. If a Participant logs a high activity count — for example, 1,000 pages in a Read-A-Thon — even a modest per-unit pledge amount multiplies quickly into a large total. Setting a maximum per-unit pledge amount before your Campaign goes live prevents this in future Campaigns.

How do I find out which per-unit pledges are driving a high Campaign total?

Open your Campaign and go to View A-Thon Pledges. Sort the list by Per-Unit to bring the highest uncapped pledges to the top, then look for Participants with high activity counts — these two factors combined produce the largest totals. For a full breakdown of pledge activity across your Campaign, see Understand: A-Thon Reports.

Can a donor update or change their per-unit pledge before the Campaign is finalized?

Yes, as long as the Campaign hasn’t been finalized yet. A donor can log in to their RallyUp account and update their pledge directly. You can also edit a pledge on their behalf by going to View Donations, finding the donor’s record, and selecting Edit.

How do I find contact information for a donor who pledged anonymously?

Even if a donor gave anonymously, their contact details are still stored in RallyUp. Go to View Donations, locate the donor’s record, and select Edit to view their name and email address so you can reach out before the Campaign is finalized. For more detail on editing donor records, see How-to: Update Donor Information for Completed Transactions.
